The Aristocats is a critical turning point for Disney because they stopped doing fine hand inking of the linework for the finished cels and switched to xeroxing the pencil art directly onto the transparencies, continuing to paint them conventionally.

This saved money but it was a big step down aesthetically. The Computer Animation Production System (CAPS) was developed to implement the old style ink and paint digitally, saving money and allowing more refined art. It was tested on Little Mermaid for just one shot and used to produce The Rescuers Down Under, the very first all-digital feature film. CAPS was a 2K resolution system with 48 bit depth, allowing fine compositing and avoiding the artifacting often seen in low light scenes (Netflix compression notoriously generates these jaggy distracting blocks).
