As someone who was new to Linux not too long ago: there are like two major DEs to choose from and i ended up not loving either of them. Yes, there are tons of full DEs but GNOME and KDE are the main ones. COSMIC being ugly is just your opinion, and it won't be full of bugs forever. At some point, i hope it becomes a third major option that Mostly Just Works With Very Little Hassle and is easy to troubleshoot due to existing already on the internet. If that existed when i was starting out about a year ago, i may have never ventured into the landscape of niche WMs.
If you don't include all the [too many to count] WMs, then i believe it's *not* difficult to choose which DE to use (you can literally try them all!), so having one more choice is actually pretty nice. If you do include all WMs, then having one more choice doesn't make much of a negative impact either (like brodie pointed out in the other reply)
