This past summer, my Mother went to visit my 103 year old Grandmother in Lebanon. It was a trip she made every year. It’d had been a short visit, far from the endless sun-kissed summers we used to spend when the Lebanese economy was good. Before she travelled back, my Mom gathered all the paper bills my Grandmother had saved at various spots around her house. It came about 30 million of Lebanese Liras.

My mom calculated that should be just enough to pay for about a year of utilities.

My Grandmother told my mom to wait. She went to her bedroom and searched for a discontinued bill of 1 Lebanese Lira that she had kept in an old drawer. I didn’t even know it ever existed. She showed it to my mom.

“This” she said, “was when money was worth something in this Country.”

“They destroyed it all.”
