"If you have nothing private to share anymore, then how do people actually know what they mean to you?

For many of us in the modern, digital world, privacy has become something that is not a cultural value anymore. In fact, we're now in a world where taking steps to maintain privacy actually generates *mistrust*.

Culture has largely shifted away from what once was a closely held belief of a right to privacy, and it is now considered more a privilege than a right. Instead, people value sharing as much of their lives in public as possible in order to 'express themselves.' Why? To gain followers, i.e. popularity and social status. Of course, these photo- and video-sharing lives are really just a surrogate activity for forming and having actual relationships.

Privacy is a very human desire to choose what to reveal and to whom, to establish a sense of one’s own identity and to form special bonds with other people."
