please don't put mastodon(fediverse) and bluesky("the atmosphere") on one heap!
i think the design of mastodon is pretty solid, you can just decide not to federate with their biggest silo and it still works fine, you'll still see most posts, my concerns with them are mostly:
- users are bound to instances, migration is painful and can be prevented by the admin, this creates a nasty kind of instance politics
- implementations are heavyweight server-side, spinning one up requires serious resources and skills
- the community is just no fun (lol, this is very personal)
so i prefer nostr, but it's definitely not as fake as bluesky in that regard
