we used to have this idea.. that there was a "true" version of ourselves. self discovery was true exploration, an attempt to find the latent "true self" hiding beneath the surface... and recently we have come to the conclusion of how impossibly wrong that is.. how stripping of free will that is...
there is no "true self" other than the one willingly created in ones own mind. there is no latent variable lurking, unobserved. there is no ground truth. there is no cocoon of self-exploration where you enter a caterpillar and exit a butterfly.. one must forge its own wings.
