No, I have been very lucky not to know anyone who called himself or herself “trans,” though I do know a woman who socially transed her child. The people I know who believe in “gender identity” include both those who do and those who do not have close “trans” friends or relatives. I think you may be onto something when you say “wanting to believe,” and yet, the moderates give me pause. They seem to assume there must be something to it. I think they’ve (genuinely) fallen for the false compromise or “middle ground” fallacy.
Yes, I’ve said that, myself, about belief in religion, fate, etc. being more understandable than this “gender identity” crap. I do think they are more genuine, healthy beliefs. However, they get us in the ballpark.
