It's generally not a good place to end but it's a good place to start.
Just start dabbling with self custody, trezor/ledger are good starts, put small amounts and play around with your Bitcoins
If you do get more comfortable, then store more. Self custody isn't for everyone and there is no shame in it, and in fact Bitcoin doesn't work if everyone does it (not enough block space)
Be your own bank sounds good but being a bank is difficult and comes with many security trade offs and responsibilities.
