Different types of viruses mutate at different rates. Some are relatively static any take a long time to evolve. Some are constantly changing and spread so fast that every year the strain has changed around the world. Some are even faster and more elusive and we can’t even develop vaccines for them yet.

Because of this wild diversity in the types of viruses, different vaccines have different effects. Some protect you forever. Some for years. Some for months. Some give you immunity, some lessen symptoms.

The flu shot and now covid are really the only two I’m aware of that fall into the “annual” category, and no one is forcing me to take either, or even trying.
