I think it was an important use case because it gave us all a place to come to and created a concentration of the similar-minded. They also laid all the groundwork for later developments. We're using their technology, but different application. We still need keys, notes, relays, zaps, etc. We can reuse their GUI libraries, so our stuff looks pretty.

But innovation is slowing. Tangible. Gazillion versions in development, but they all do something similar.
