So players not doing this – just like the noble PC not having everyone whipped for similar reasons – requires a certain level of meta-gaming, to be honest.
That's why I'm asking: Should this be prevented in world-building (hard to do), campaign setup (e.g. no PC clerics of high social standing), players not being needlessly obstructionist? Or do people actually like that part of gaming?
Sometimes I'm a bit worried about the level of feudal fandom in fantasy RPGs…
