What do you feel about wearing ashes in public?
I know some people say its a good witness, others have said it's a reminder, particularly to our brethren who don't practice the faith regularly that "oh yeah it's Ash Wednesday I guess I should go do a thing."
On the other hand when I went through RCIA our rector (Msgr. Cappo, St. Peter Cathedra) had recommended washing it off as soon as you get home after mass. Every year I can't help but think of Jesus' instructions on fasting.
“When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you. Treasure in Heaven" Matthew 6:16-18
