I used https://nostr.info/relays/ to pick relays once and haven’t had an issue since. I filtered by “sent us many events without dropping”, and skipped the relays which seemed to be getting overrun with events. Basically picked those near the high end of incoming event rate but stopped short of the outliers. However, I’m sure many improvements to picking relays will come. I see some relays are adding functionality through query parameters, when you add the relay, you can include your npub in the websocket address and then only see notes from people you follow and people they follow. Some relays you add will also send your notes to other popular relays. Seems like there is a lot of experimentation going on currently, and a lot of new functionality will become standard practice soon enough.
