So all FPPS pools (most of them) got screwed and had to pay miners almost double in tx fees today because of the 20BTC fee someone paid.

They won’t see any of that money but they have to pay out the rolling average fee for the whole network each day (past 144 blocks). Recent average has been ~30btc per day in fees, today it was 50.

Interesting attack vector. A malicious non-FPPS pool could self mine their own transactions with very high fees and put all the FPPS pools out of business. They might have to start filtering out these outliers, or more likely switch to PPS+ which would lead to pool consolidation.

PPS+ pools pay miners the average fees for the blocks they themselves mine. Safer for the pool, but most miners prefer FPPS because it eliminates more variance…unless the pool is big enough that their personal average is statistically equivalent to the FPPS average - hence the consolidation.

PPLNS pools (basically just Braiins at this point) are unaffected. Although it would have been very interesting to see What would have happened if they would have won that 26 BTC block. Can’t imagine there would be any chance the sender would be able to recover funds whereas Chun from F2Pool has already unilaterally offered to return the funds (and is presumably eating the higher FPPS fees as well).
