This classic is full of little nuggets.
When I heard this as I kid, my mother explained to me how it's tied to a film ("The Graduate") and the novel of which the film was an adaptation. The author of The Graduate, Charles Webb, revealed that there was a real life inspiration for the story by the name of Jane Ericson, though he denied having an affair wih her. The novel's subtitle is "A novel of today's youth, unlike any other you have read". I have neither read it, nor seen the film (yet).
The song also let me to learning (very superficially) of the existence of Joe DeMaggio. Because of the song, DeMaggio confronted Simon at a restaurant, where Simon explained "I thought of him as an American hero and that genuine heros were in short supply".
What made him a genuine hero??
After DeMaggio's death, Simon later stated "In these days of Presidential transgressions and apologies and prime-time interviews about private sexual matters, we grieve for Joe DiMaggio and mourn the loss of his grace and dignity, his feirce sense of privacy, his fidelity to the memory of his wife and the power of his silence".
This resonates with me.
Anyway, enjoy the song.
