A few things are like that, where Mastodon is the *only* one, which is all the more strange given that it's clearly the dominant platform and by a huuuge margin.
I personally think the fediverse's growth will depend on or correlate with its ability to move on from mastodon (at least as we know it).
In many ways, that's in users' hands, because so many are happy to stick with and defend mastodon without even exploring the wider fediverse or even the idea of it.
