it is often used to treat depression, but it also makes people (and presumably some other animals, too) photosensitive. I tried some St John's wort tincture in college, took a couple weeks to take effect, and can confirm it helped lift my mood but also made even overcast sunlight too bright outdoors, so I stopped taking it.
