Gossip has always verified the signature on events. Gossip is a desktop client so I'm not really concerned too much about battery life. But even if I were, I can't imagine not verifying event signatures, which seems to me to be rather fundamental to the idea of not needing to trust relays. Especially if you connect to the many write relays of the many people you follow, you definitely can't be trusting their relays.
I'm sad to learn that it is expensive to do so and that mobile phone clients drain a lot of battery doing so. I had no idea they were stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one.
