as another active tiktok user, I think you are grossly mischaracterizing the typical user of Tiktok. While I share your concern for what young people who are still learning media literacy are exposed to, most of the young tiktok users I interact with on and offline are better at critical thinking than older generations, not worse.

They have not been exposed to mainstream corporate media in the way older generations have, and a lot of the content they consume is peer-generated. This is the double edged sword of all social media, yes, but tiktok in particular is actively being used by thousands of young adults right now as a tool of instruction in how to deconstruct USA imperialist propaganda. They are teaching and learning media literacy in real time. This is stuff that I can tell you, as an educator, is barely being taught in schools any earlier than college. And we can see the impact this is having on public opinion right now!

We've never seen public pro Palestinian support like we're seeing now, and Tiktok is a huge part of the reason why. This info is not being filtered by massive corporate networks; people are watching a genocide happen through their phones.

They're pissed about it, and they should be. The gov't moving rapidly in a bipartisan way to restrict public access to Tiktok is among other things an attempt to control the flow of information.

That facet of it, at least, ain't passive at all.
