If I were in that situation I might decide to be outwardly self-indulgent for once in my life and admit defeat in my self-imposed stoicism (the only other people who care about what's right at the moment are other internet wierdos). Again, this is from the perspective of a guy who has several more years to go and no career yet to speak of.
If I've understood your career success correctly, you might be able to go to japan or korea (or taiwan or hong-kong) instead, which are definitely higher status. Plus to better cope there's that Eurasian Future meme, which although having questionable origins and motivations, is strangly compeling at least to me. Probably because it's one of the few ideas which has a positive future vision.
