I’m fascinated by the Yakhchals of the Persian empire. The first refrigerators ever made, sometime around 500BC. They could store ice through hot summers in the desert, just using clever architecture and airflow.
Now, because the temperature differential is so great between the outside desert air, and the ice down in the core, they are being investigated as a potential battery.
