They do understand "names of websites", and I get buy in on a first step of renting a domain name from an ICANN registry and using it for email - even if hosted on gmail. They understand that this gives them the power to change vendors (at least until ICANN cancels their domain) or even self-host. Most registrars also offer WordPress websites.
I try to push "compiler" style content management like Hugo - but the process of transforming then uploading their content (and local version control) is too abstract for "normies".
