I could say that she had a difficult childhood. She lost her parents, spent time in an awful orphanage in a dying town where everything was falling apart, became a part of a violent gang to protect herself. Later, she wanted to be safe and in control, so she joined a powerful organization and protected it... no matter the cost. But that's not completely fair. She's not the only character with this background. 1/2
