After 9/11, there were a group of people who believed that the best way to eradicate the scourge of Islamist terror was to "fight them over there". Neocons seized upon this and used it as a pretext for their forever wars of progressive conquest. The people who wanted their homeland safe were tricked. They were sold a bill of goods.
They got the Patriot Act and the DHS, neither of which did anything but give the government the tools to surveil American citizens. And, they lost 10,000 of the best men America had to offer in Afghanistan and Iraq for absolutely nothing, their lives wasted.
Many at the time on the Left suggested we had it coming or we shouldn't seek to prevent another 9/11.
