That was a generation who didn’t like talking about the past—but I pestered them and they did give me bits and pieces. My grandfather was a medic in WWI and then became a physician. Both grandparents talked to me about the horrible diseases that killed and permanently damaged so many children before vaccines were developed. They viewed my youth as the golden years of human development.
