Finding myself haunted by the phrase "it's just a quality-of-life issue" right now.
I read it in an otherwise innocuous paragraph and for some reason it struck me like a lightning bolt: why do we … do … anything … if not to improve the quality of life? it is distressing to think about how our culture got so sick that "quality of life" has come to be almost synonymous with frivolity or inessential crenelations. Profit & efficiency are important, "quality of life", an afterthought
