Another #bookstr recommendation that might be a nice change for your reading list.
Foul! The Secret World of FIFA: Bribes, Vote Rigging and Ticket Scandals by investigative journalist Andrew Jennings is an incredible read.
Detailing the politics and corruption of FIFA spanning decades and every continent, tales which seem absurd but were largely all proven true.
The story of Sepp Blatter’s rise to the presidency, bankrolled by Qatari Mohammed Bin Hammam who was President of the AFC is my favourite. I couldn’t believe how brazen it all was!
After I had read this book, Blatter’s FIFA decided to award the rights for 2018 & 2022 at the same time, an unprecedented move and clearly a corrupt power play. When I saw tiny little Qatar was a contender for 2022 I knew the fix was in to pay back Bin Hammam and made a handsome profit on a 40/1 bet.
The political intrigue, factional rivalries, brown paper bag corruption and wheeling and dealing described in this book is quite incredible and will give you a real sense of how power is wielded in large institutions in a way you won’t find elsewhere. Like looking at the swamp through a microscope and watching every creature devolve into more and more hideous things as time goes on.
