The further away you got from the issuing bank, the more you could lose in value, say 1-2% sometimes up to 10%. This could be compared to ATM fees today. A shop keeper would even have to consult the Thompson's Bank Note and Commercial Reporter to see if the bank your note was from was in good standing, or whether or not the $2 note with Santa Claus on it from Waupun, Wisconsin was valid.
