In Persian the word God is "Khoda" which is the combination of the 2 words "khod"(self) and "A" (come). put together :"come to self" aka know thyself.
There's much emphasis on knowing oneself through dynamic meditation which is known as Samaa - whirling dance- in Persian Sufism.

Even in ancient meditation techniques such as Vipassana the core idea is self awareness by practicing silent meditation.

Knowing yourself is about identifying what matters to you, your strengths and weaknesses, your behaviors, tendencies, and thought patterns.

Even now as an spiritual agnostic, I can’t really define what God is, I’m not even sure what to call it, Jesus, Buddha, Bhagwan, Yahweh or Allah or the Cosmos. One thing I’m pretty sure is daily practice of meditation is essential to knowing yourself better, regardless of ideology and belief. This is the only way out of misery.

As a former atheist, I understand why religiousness seems absurd.

However, this is usually due to a difference in definitions rather than substance. Atheists think of “God” as an external ruler deciding events and making judgements from afar.

Theists realize God exists within each of us, known as the Atman in Hinduism, the Holy Spirit in Christianity, or the Self of the World in the words of Alan Watts.

If the word “God” carries too much baggage for you, try replacing it with “The Cosmos” or “The Ground of Being” as Tillich calls it.
