I don't think so. What does it mean to "live in a world of ideas"? Wherever you go on it, the internet is made up solely of information.
Unless you are saying they do very little manual labour compared to this side of fedi? I haven't seen any evidence for that.

And what do the ideas need to be protected from exactly?

Ideas aren't fragile. They are very robust. Physical objects can't destroy information, only the physical object it is encoded upon. If the information is copied to many objects (for instance, pieces of paper, hard drives, flash drives, SSDs, brains) spread out over a wide area, it is very hard to destroy. Only one needs to survive for the information to survive.
