With distrowatch.com having nearly 300 Linux distributions, it can seem overwhelming to anyone trying to decide which distro to install for the first time.

However, for all practical purposes most Linux distributions are based on 3 "base" distributions. Those are:

1. Debian
2. Fedora
3. Arch

Sure there are other base distros, but they aren't as common.

A Linux distribution will also pre-install one of the common "desktop environments". Desktop environments give your computer a different look and feel kinda like Win 98, Win 7, and Win 10 are different.

Some of the most common desktop environments in Linux are:

- Gnome
- KDE
- Cinnamon
- Mate
- Xfce
- i3

So basically, Linux distros package a base distro with a desktop environment, and give it a custom theme . . . wallpaper, colors, fonts, icons.. and so on.

Linux Mint (https://linuxmint.com) is a good 1st time distro, which is based on Debian, and offers the Cinnamon, Mate and Xfce versions, with Cinnamon being most recommended for 1st time users.
