I agree that it doesn't romanticize sex work. But it romanticizes something--whether it's society's attitude toward sex work or some aspect of 19th-c. femininity, I can't put my finger on. The depiction of the nature and use of profanity bothered me too as anachronistic. But I guess all three are part of the general stylized depiction of reality it presents. In all honesty, it took me three tries to get past the overacting and florid archness of the writing and just accept it all.
