You're right. You feel accepted by the community in Germany, and I suspect you felt the same way in the States.
In contrast, I tend to view African Americans as *internal* foreigners who are basically special, barely tolerated long-term guests, while foreign black people like my parents (and by extension myself despite native citizenship) as external foreigners. I'm an American, but for all intents and purposes, the racists don't think of me as one.
