A study published in the New York Times found that the regions of the human brain that expanded the most in evolution are also the most vulnerable to aging. The study analyzed brain scans of 189 chimpanzees and 480 humans and found that the orbitofrontal cortex, a region essential for decision-making, shrinks the fastest in humans. The researchers suggest that the neurons that carry out complex thinking may wear out quickly, causing the regions to shrink.
