Iris / Snort is actually using the outbox model (by Kieran (npub1v0l…qj49) ) so yes, incoming duplicates in queries by author would probably not see a 90% reduction, but maybe some other queries like reactions and replies would.

However, the bigger savings arise from having a local db and not having to download events you already have. Efficient sync protocols like negentropy let your local relay sync with as many relays or peers as you want at a low cost, which is good for decentralization.

While the outbox model helps break out of centralized relays, it's even better if the content can be found and synced from many places, including our pockets. If Alex Jones had public write relays, they'd be targets for DDoS and harassment.
