We've had a number of iterations of hardware over a long period of time. Each time it never quite takes off like the hype machine keeps suggesting. What's really needed is the "killer VR app." A use case so good it would make people with no interest in VR want to put one on to use it, whatever it ends up being. Until that happens it'll likely remain something for enthusiasts, designers, niche purposes.
