Pay to use: Bolt, M-KOPA to issue cheaper e-bikes to boda boda operators

Bolt, a digital taxi-hailing firm, has partnered with digital financing firm M-KOPA to finance ownership of electric motorcycles for boda boda operators in Kenya. The partnership will allow new and existing operators to acquire electric bikes for as low as KSh 10,000. The deal will give customers a chance to lease ROAM and Ampersand electric motorbikes at a discounted price, 15% cheaper than the current market rates. By the end of 2024, 1,000 electric motorbikes will be distributed, with a total of 5,000 in the next two years. The electric motorbikes will save drivers 40% off total ownership costs compared to petrol bikes, and up to 75% off operation costs. The financial model used by M-KOPA allows drivers to pay for the bikes while using them, with repayment periods of up to 12, 18, or 24 months. The partnership is part of Bolt's commitment to enhance driver earnings and move towards eco-friendly urban mobility. The government of Kenya announced plans to roll out electric motorcycles in September 2023, with industry stakeholders including Uber Kenya supporting the move.
