"content": "#DailySpiderPic: Meet Polyphemos, emerging from its cave!\n\nI noticed something funny about one of the bold jumping spiders (_Phidippus audax_) living in the railing by the Sunnyside pool: it's missing an eye! I have seen a few photos of jumpers with similar abnormalities, but never expected to find one myself. I don't know whether it is a mishap in development or molting, or some mutation, or what. \n\nA missing main eye must be a significant handicap, but it's lasted this long (it's about half grown, I think), so it must be managing somehow. It has a safe retreat in the railing and a large supply of flying insects and smaller spiders to feed on.\n\nI've marked the part of the railing where it lives so I can go back and check on it easily. Will update if I can.\n\n#SpidersOfMastodon #JumpingSpiders #InverteFest #ArthroBeauty • #Araneae #Salticidae\nhttps://fliprock.files.fedi.monster/media_attachments/files/113/036/647/101/990/935/original/e2b387c6d84cf228.jpg\n",
