I have vague memories of encountering the hypothesis that sexual selection is a major factor in leg length. Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_spider_crab#Description ) says males have much longer legs, which is at least consistent with this hypothesis, but doesn't mention sexual selection. The citation links to an article which is in Dutch (and sadly google translate, which I used to rely on so much, now fills me with revulsion.)
