Over the past 12 years, Big Tech has been building its data centers in Chile. A total of 16 have been approved in Santiago’s metropolitan area since 2012, and President Gabriel Boric announced last month that 28 more were on their way.
Most of these data centers use millions of liters of water annually to keep computers from overheating, and yet Chile is in the midst of a drought, expected to last until 2040.
