the single-core CPU benchmarks on PassMark don't look all that impressive compared to my 7-year-old i7-6700K.
the i7 scores 2513 while the top performer in that category scores 4789.
that's a 1.9X boost. but it's been 7 years, and this boost pales in comparison to the multi-core benchmarks. we're still just piling on more cores for performance.
if you look at PassMark's gaming score, single-core performance is single-most important component of that score.
it's hard to parallelise stuff like physics, since it has to happen in sequence, so it's still really important to have good single-core performace.
and considering it's been almost a decade now, progress in that space is at a virtual standstill now compared to the drastic performance jumps we experienced all through the 90s and early 00s.
