Rights group: China imprisons more than 449,000 Uyghurs in Xinjiang

China currently imprisons more than 449,000 Uyghurs in Xinjiang, about one in 17, according to a report by the Uyghur Human Rights Project. The report also estimates that 1 in 26 Uyghurs and non-Han people in Xinjiang were incarcerated in 2022. The ethnic minority in the Uyghur Region accounts for 34% of China's estimated prison population. Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised concerns about human rights abuses in Xinjiang during his trip to China, but Beijing criticized him for interfering in domestic affairs. The State Department's 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices documented genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang. The report also highlighted harsh conditions in penal institutions. The Uyghur Human Rights Project director stated that the prison system benefits the Chinese economy, as prisoners work in factories near prisons. The report also mentions cases of Uyghurs being imprisoned for reading the Quran. Chinese Muslim community leader Ma Ju stated that the U.S. has exhausted its efforts in addressing Uyghur human rights. The report concludes that China's oppression of the Uyghur minority group continues.
