At the least the 3rd party should also be running candidates at other levels. A Presidential year is a good year to run for publicity reasons.

3rd parties is can influence policies of the big 2.

A negative is that they are often spoilers. It isn't unusual for a big party to funnel money to 3rd parties, know that have the 3rd party in the race will spoil it for the other party.
