We entrust the police with the right to legally take away our freedom.
The second they breach that collective trust they should lose their ability to take away those freedoms. I don't care what the suspect has done, of if he 'deserved it'.
They aren't normal civilians; they don't get to have a 'moment of weakness' or an 'emotional flashpoint'.
They have to show unwavering restraint and respect for the position they've been granted in our society.
