I am also a member of the "no airplane mode". I've also tried making phone calls from a plane in flight and have never been able to connect. Evidently the techonology existed in 2001, when so many passengers on the doomed flights were able to say goodbye to their loved ones, but I guess it doesn't exist any more. Like the technology for making moon landings.
