That's how we did it when I was a kid and they have a slightly different tast when you do it that way. (Granny Smith are the best for that method as they hold on to the string best and are nice and tart). This method is best after you turn your heaters on for the season. Helps with drying/eliminating potential mold.
I do use the dehydrator for other varietys or if my heat isn't on yet. I don't put anything on them. Some people put lemon juice & cinnamon.
