It probably sounds like I am just backseating, but still: Why are you so afraid of losing a few users? Your service burns all your time and at least 700 bucks a month, and still you won't ask users to pay for small gimmicks, just because you gave them away for free before...
On a related note, since you don't seem to like some of these ideas, maybe take a different perspective:
What would you have to cut to make poast sustainable at 1.4k/mo?
Sell the things you have cut to donors.
