what that article doesn’t mention is that the wives/mothers movement was pivotal to Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, and was one of the earliest cracks that led to the fall of the USSR overall, so the current demobilization effort is scary for Putin.

The difference between then and now is that Brezhnev conveniently died and was replaced by a reformer (Gorbachev) a few years later after all the regressive replacements also died in office within months of each other.

I’m not sure whether Russia will get that kind of opportunity at reform, because this will certainly not be solved through elections since they will not be in any way or shape “free” this year: Putin will win and will continue to rule until he drops dead.
