I am so sorry for your friend. I've been dealing with multiple deaths in my family that came at the same time and it's so difficult to process.
What I do know from my own experience is even if you don't have the answers, being there and trying to help does matter and he does notice, even if he's not in the state to truly convey it yet.
The only thing you can do is the thing you're doing; being there.
