I mean, if you don't have anything to say, you could always just use 'okay' or 'cool,' except when a better response is required. Or simply let the person know you're busy if you're not free. Another thing is, it just gives you the feeling that the person is currently online, so the conversation might continue. Just my one cent. 😁
